Senior Resident Superior Court Judge, Superior Court District 19

Nathaniel J. Poovey is the Senior Resident Superior Court Judge in Superior Court District 19 (Catawba County).  Poovey was first elected to the Superior Court bench in 2002. Before his election, he was a partner at Sigmon, Sigmon, Isenhower & Poovey in Newton, North Carolina where he maintained a general trial practice in Superior and District Court.  After law school, Poovey clerked for Judge (later Justice) Mark Martin on the North Carolina Court of Appeals.

Poovey earned a B.A., cum laude, in political science from The Citadel in 1993 and a J.D. from Campbell University Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law in 1996, where he served as an editor at large of the Campbell Law Review.  Judge Poovey has presided over hundreds of trials, both civil and criminal, in over 30 counties, mostly in the western half of North Carolina.  He has served on various local boards in and around Catawba County including the Catawba County Parks Advisory Board, The Pregnancy Care Center, Maiden Rescue Squad and at his church, May’s Chapel Methodist.  Judge Poovey is a current Board member and past president of the North Carolina Superior Court Judges Conference.
